Working With an Agency
How to Give an Agency Access to Your Meta Ad Account
This is one of the most common things that stalls a new campaign: the business owner isn't sure what they're being asked for, assumes it means handing over a password, and the project sits waiting. Here's what's actually involved, in plain terms.
Why This Trips People Up
Most business owners have never had a reason to open Meta Business Settings before. The request to "give us access" sounds vague, and the natural assumption is that it means sharing a login and password, which understandably feels risky. It doesn't mean that, and it shouldn't.
What You're Actually Sharing, and What You're Not
- A role assigned to specific assets: your Page, ad account, or catalog
- Limited to what you assign, nothing more
- Visible to you at all times in Business Settings
- Revocable in a couple of clicks, whenever you want
- Your Facebook password or login details
- Access to your personal profile
- A transfer of ownership of your Page or account
- Something you can't see or undo once it's given
Two Ways This Usually Works
Which method you use depends on whether the agency has a formal Business Portfolio with a Partner Business ID, or is a smaller team working from individual Facebook profiles, which is common and not a red flag on its own. Either way, you stay in control.
- Adding a person directly (no Business ID needed)You add the specific person to your Page by name, the same way you'd add any team member. This is the simpler path, and it's what most small agencies and freelancers actually ask for.
- Business Portfolio (Partner) accessThe agency gives you a Partner Business ID, and you grant that whole business access to specific assets, your Page, ad account or catalog, in one step. More common with larger agencies that already run a formal Business Manager setup.
Step by Step: Adding Someone Directly to Your Page
On your Facebook Page
- Go to your Page and open Settings
- Click "Page access" (this replaced the older "Page Roles")
- Under "People with Facebook access", click "Add New"
- Search for their name and select the correct profile
- Confirm with your own password when asked
- Choose "Full control" for the same access level an admin has
- They get a notification, and the access only applies once they accept it
This is the method to use whenever an agency simply asks you to "add them as an admin" on your Page, rather than giving you an ID to enter anywhere.
If an Agency Gives You a Business ID Instead
In Meta Business Suite
- Go to business.facebook.com and open Business Settings
- Click "Partners" in the left-hand menu, then "Add"
- Choose "Give a partner access to your assets"
- Enter the agency's Partner Business ID
- Select the specific Page, ad account or catalog to share
- Choose the role, usually "Admin" or "Advertiser" for an ad account
If you don't have a Business Portfolio set up yet, Meta creates one the first time you go through this process.
Keeping Control
- Check who has access at any time under Business Settings > Partners
- Remove an agency's access in a couple of clicks when a project ends
- Never share your personal password or login, no legitimate agency will ask for it
- Ask what role was assigned if you're not sure what an agency can and can't do
